If you are about to buy your movie tickets, we tell you which is the best format to see The Batman and enjoy it better.
Finally, The Batman is in theaters monopolizing the world box office, so we tell you what is the best format to see this new DC movie. To do this, we followed the advice of Benny Har-Even, the technology journalist and Forbes contributor.
IMAX is an option?
The film was shot with digital cameras instead of IMAX cameras, using the large format Arri Alexa LF, which is “Filmed For IMAX” certified. According to Har-Even, Matt Reeves tweeted “that he was done quality checking his movie in IMAX” and wrote, “It looked and sounded so amazing. What a beautiful immersive format.”
However, anamorphic lenses, which give a widescreen format, were used, so “The Batman will not feature an IMAX stretched aspect ratio and the entire film will be screened in a standard aspect ratio.”
Then Har-Even himself claims that, in another tweet, Reeves mentioned that he also had a version “in an awesome #DolbyVision with an absolutely amazing #DolbyAtmos sound”. That is, the other Premium format today. Says Har-Even: “As incredible as IMAX is, in absolute terms of picture quality, the dynamic range and colors displayed in a Dolby Cinema system even exceed IMAX, and without the benefit of the ratio enlarged aspect ratio, gives Dolby Cinema the edge as the definitive format for viewing this film.”
But, bad news, in Mexico this Dolby Cinema technology has not reached commercial theaters. You can, yes, find some Premium rooms in Mexico with Dolby Atmos sound technology.
So yes, IMAX is a good option.
As for atypical experiences: at least in Mexico City, The Batman is shown in 4DX and ScreenX.
It’s also in drive-ins, but because of the darkness that dominates the film, adding the outdoor experience, which makes it even darker, doesn’t sound very recommendable. Sure, unless you’re just looking to spend time outdoors.
Matt Reeves recommendation
As part of The Batman premiere, the director shared a letter with exhibitors giving them recommendations on projector calibration to enhance the theater experience.
He wrote: “I am very excited to bring you The Batman exclusively in theaters. I worked with my team for a long time to create a unique story with a very specific aspect of Gotham and its great characters.”
“The lighting and color timing used to capture this look was very important to me because taking our audience to a place they’ve never experienced before is why they come to the theater.”
“To ensure your audience enjoys the film the way you intended, please calibrate your projectors to achieve at least 14fL. Let’s give the audience the best possible experience.”
With 14fL, Reeves refers to the footlambert or pie-lambert, which is the unit of measurement for the lighting system. The American Motion Picture Association recommends calibrating projectors for 2D projection at 16fL, although some exhibitors calibrate it at 12fL. For example, in 3D movies, whose projection is darker than 2D, the maximum reached by projectors is 14fL.
That is, the director is recommending the minimum lighting to prevent details of his film from being lost in a dark projection.
So if, due to the type of theaters in your area, you cannot choose the ideal format to see The Batman, at least make sure that darkened films are not usually shown in your cinema.
