Five years after Spider-Man’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Uncle Ben finally receives a reference within the MCU
One of the doubts that revolve in relation to the version of Spider-Man that operates in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the existence (and subsequent death) of Ben Parker, something that was finally presented within the MCU, in the animated series What If …?
Don’t miss: What If… ?: Was zombie Thanos right in his extermination?
If you remember the episode What if … There were zombies !?, when the team of survivors of the zombie infection travels to the facility, Hope is injured by the zombie version of Sharon Carter, so the infection could attack her.
Despite the bleak scenario for the survivors, Peter Parker shows optimism, something that surprises Hope Van Dyne, for which Peter reveals how he is not very fatalistic.
“I think I have practice… Mom, Dad, Uncle Ben, Mr. Stark… now Happy… I’ve lost a lot. But my Aunt May says ‘If we don’t keep smiling when they can’t, then we might as well go’”.
Uncle Ben’s debut in the MCU
Since its first appearance in 2016, in the Civil War plot, the stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have not touched the event that changed Peter Parker’s life forever, as we read about it in Amazing Fantasy 15.
The only approach to Uncle Ben’s death was hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming, when Peter asks Ned not to tell his secret, now that Parker operates in the suit that Tony Stark built for him.
In the cinema two actors have played Ben Parker, in Spider-Man (2002) Oscar winner Cliff Robetson was chosen to play Uncle Ben, while in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) the lathe was the experienced Martin Sheen
Ben Parker in the What If…?
In the comic series What If…? published in the 1970s, it was raised in issue 46 What if Uncle Ben were still alive? Ben Parker is the one who manages to live, but in return Aunt May is the one who is murdered.
In this story, Uncle Ben learns that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are the same, when the relationship between them is tense, in a fight where Ben Parker himself unmasks his nephew before the eyes of JJ Jameson.
The inspiration for this animated series comes from the What If…? Comics, which were published since the 1970s, where alternate scenarios to stories we know were presented.
The first episodes of season 1 of What If…? are available on the Disney Plus digital platform.
