It had been exactly one year and 11 days since Ormeño had not been part of the bicolor, he was in Reynoso’s first two friendlies, but he did not add minutes, and after that he was not taken into account again until now. His return is linked to the lack of alternatives up front and the absence of a goal in the qualifying start. And although he does not accumulate as many minutes with the ‘sele’, ‘Santi’ still has a lot to prove. Of course, he already knows what it’s like to play games for points (he did it at the end of the ‘Gareca era’) and he is facing a new opportunity to continue being taken into account.
Ormeño numbers in the national team | Matches | Goals | Minutes |
---|---|---|---|
America Cup | 6 | – | 77′ |
Qualifiers (Qatar 2022) | 4 | – | 100′ |

TOTAL | eleven | – | 191′ |
What Ormeño can contribute to Reynoso are specific points, since he is a positional forward, unlike Paolo Guerrero, who usually goes back meters to receive the ball. Santiago is more of a reference ‘9’ who is dangerous inside the area, his 1.87 meters tall provides an important role in the aerial game, not only in attack, but in defense, especially because of what we experienced recently in the hard fall against Brazil.
Of course, having a forward with these characteristics has its risks, speed is not his greatest virtue and outside the area he loses his ‘9’ traits, situations that Ricardo Gareca only saw when he had him in the team. During the ‘Tigre’ stage, Santiago Ormeño was called up in the absence of Paolo Guerrero (injured). He was Lapadula’s replacement, but on the court he was not used to the fullest due to the style of play.
Gareca’s ‘sele’ always needed a forward who leaves the area, makes diagonals, forces the center backs to leave their zone, characteristics not so closely linked to Ormeño. For this reason, his time in the bicolor was not what everyone expected, especially because he arrived with a reputation as a scorer in the Mexican League. Being a typical classic ‘9’ he needed to be supplied with centers and passes, so he was not able to make the most of it.
With Reynoso, the situation looks different. ‘Cabezón’ knows him well (he coached him in Puebla, León and Garcilaso), he knows his characteristics and how to play with a ‘9’ like that. The only thing the ‘Chess Player’ has to do is what moment to put him in, whether against Chile or Argentina. Guerrero is the starter, but if two attackers are needed, as he did against Brazil, Ormeño can provide greater offensive volume and defensive support from above. ‘Santi’ could stay in the area and the captain collect himself.
What is your present?
Ormeño returns to the red and white at an important moment in his career. After having a difficult start to the year, due to an injury and the lack of a goal, the Juárez striker has regained confidence in the 23/24 season and recently found himself back in the net. He scored at the end of August and ended a scoring drought of more than a year.
He has been receiving the trust of his coach and although he competes in the position with the Spanish Aitor García and the Colombian Avilés Hurtado, he has been alternating in the Aztec Apertura, either starting as a starter or coming in from the bench. He has played four games this season and has already scored a goal with the ‘braves’ shirt.
