Don’t Miss: Jack Kirby’s Creations, From A to Z
While this group of powerful beings is new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the cartoons they feature great feats and unions with other teams such as The Avengers.
With the imminent arrival of the Eternals on the big screen, here are some essential comic book pre-readings you need to know before watching the Marvel Studios movie.
Eternals # 1 (July, 1976)
The origin of this great mythology comes to us with the first issue of the series created by Jack Kirby, who was inspired by the book Memories of the future (Charriots of the Gods) by Erich von Däniken, to deliver a mythology that over time gained importance within the Marvel Universe.
In this volume it is explained that mysterious gods experimented on a planet earth in its primitive era, where three important races emerged, the Deviants, the Eternals and the humans.
Eternals # 5 (November, 1976)
As the history of the Eternals unfolds in the Marvel Universe, new allies join their ranks, with powers greater than those of the gods.
This volume is joined by Zuras and his daughter Thena, as well as Makkari, who join Ikaris and Sersi’s fight against Kro and the Deviants.
Eternals # 11 (May, 1977)
The Celestials are nowhere near reaching Earth, which forces Zuras to gather all the Eternals that are hidden throughout the planet to repel the possible attack. Druig is part of the Soviet government, which reacts with a nuclear attack in the presence of the Eternals.
The Celestials respond to this attempted aggression by giving the Russian rulers a vision of what would happen to them if they launch their missiles.
Eternals # 12 (June, 1977)
In this tome the Eternals unleash one of their most powerful weapons, which is also seen in the film, the Uni-Mind, a gift from the Celestials to the Eternals. When several of its members unite their will and intelligence, they create a being of light, mind and pure energy.
The Avengers # 248
Avengers and Eternals United! When Maelstrom attempts to steal the power of the Avengers, the Inhumans, and the Eternals, the three teams team up to have the Eternals summon the Uni-Mind, to contain Maelstrom.
After this attack, the vast majority of the Eternals make the decision to leave the earth, in search of evolving as a species.
Eternals # 1 (1985)
In this second stage of Eternals, these beings find themselves hidden among humanity pursuing particular goals rather than a common goal.
Ikaris is a professional fighter, who finds himself in the crosshairs of Ghraur, a priest of the Deviant, who seeks the power of the Eternals to take over the Universe, prompting the Eternals to ask The Avengers for help.
Avengers # 314
Faced with the constant collaboration between the Avengers and the Eternals, Captain America incorporates Sersi into the ranks of the most powerful Heroes on the planet, but this idea turns out bad for the Eternal, as its evil side begins to emerge.
Eros, who is known as Starfox, later joins the team, but the Eternal who hails from the planet Titan (and Thanos’s brother) is not the first of his line to join the Avengers.
Eternals (2006)
With Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. as the creatives of this seven-issue series, Eternals takes place in the midst of the Civil War crossover, which rocked the Marvel Universe to its foundations.
In this story, the team awakens from a strange trance that reminds them that they are Eternals and not ordinary people, so Ikaris and Makkari must reunite the team, prior to a threat that will endanger the length and breadth of the Universe.
Eternals (2008)
In this era in charge of Charles Knauf and Daniel Acuña the divisions within the Eternals stand out. One of the Celestials and Makkari have formed a bond and faced with the threat of a Horde that plans to invade Earth, both must recruit the Eternals to fight a new battle.
This nine-volume series highlights the Eternals who use their strength and those who use their wisdom to exploit their powers.
Eternals (2020)
After an alleged death on The Avengers stage with Jason Aaron leading the way, the Eternals come back to life, focusing on Sprite, who allegedly betrayed the team, allowing them to be assassinated.
However, one of the important events of this recent series is the fight between Ikaris and Thanos, after the Mad Titan took advantage of the death of his uncle Zuras to attack the team leader.
The Eternals features a cast consisting of Richard Madden as Ikaris, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari. Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Kit Harrington as Black Knight, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.
Under the direction of new Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, Eternals is scheduled to hit the big screen on November 5, 2021.
