We are only a few days away from the premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. However, it has been revealed that Warner Bros. has removed references to Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s love affair. in this tape for the Chinese public.
The new Fantastic Beasts movie has already been released in China, and it was immediately discovered that six seconds of the original film had been cut. While this might be insignificant when we’re talking about a feature film over two hours, the content that was cut was Dumbledore’s dialogue referencing his relationship with Grindelwald.
The lines cut from the film are “because I was in love with you” and “the summer that Gellert and I fell in love”. When this information was released, Warner Bros. shared a statement justifying this decision. This was what they commented:
“As a studio, we are committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film we release, and that extends to circumstances that require making nuanced cuts to sensitively respond to a variety of factors in the marketplace. Our hope is to release our features worldwide as published by their creators, but historically we have been faced with small releases made in local markets… We want audiences around the world to see and enjoy this film, and it is important to We want the Chinese audience to have the opportunity to experience it as well, even with these minor edits… the spirit of the film remains intact.”
While Dumbledore’s sexuality was never discussed during the Harry Potter books and movies, JR Rowling, author of this magical world, revealed in 2009 that the director of Hogwarts is gay. Since then, fans have waited more than a decade to see this representation in the movies.
At least in the version that will arrive in Mexico, Dumbledore’s dialogues are present. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be available in theaters in our country on April 14, 2022. In related topics, you can check the first opinions of this tape here.
Editor’s note:
It is a real shame that these types of decisions continue to happen to please a market. However, this is something that does not surprise me, we are talking about six seconds, content that can be easily cut, and that does not really have a great weight in the story, so this was something that was already planned.
