In an interview for IGN, Chris McKenna, one of the screenwriters of Spider-Man: No Way Home, pointed out that the idea of including Mysterio in the film came from the team of concept artists, who were asked to contribute ideas before build the story.
“When we didn’t know what the movie was going to be like, we were playing around with a lot of different ideas, you’re dealing with the Multiverse and a lot of different ideas are thrown around. Brilliant artists are taking their own ideas or taking inspiration from the director, producers and making incredible works of art”.
For a moment, the return of Jake Gyllenhaal as Quemtin Beck / Mysterio was contemplated thanks to the work of the art department, although the idea was discarded in the development of the script.
“We’ve worked on some of these movies, and (the concept artists) will be bringing some amazing concept art. You’re like ‘wow, someone thought of this, and now it’s going to be a fixture… I will say when you open up the Multiverse, you get a lot of conversations where anything can happen”.
