“This investment of 10,000 million euros will electrify Spain and the second largest car manufacturer in Europe, creating a Gigafactory of batteries in Sagunto, allowing the production of electric vehicles in the Martorell and Pamplona plants. This is the largest industrial investment ever made in Spain”, said Herbert Diess.
The Sagunto battery gigafactory will have an annual production capacity of 40 GWh, supplying the total volume of cells to Martorell and Pamplona. It will employ more than 3,000 people by 2030 and will occupy an area of 200 hectares. Construction of the plant will begin in the first quarter of 2023 and is expected to be operational sometime in 2026.
Only the construction of the battery production center for electric cars will require an investment of more than 3,000 million euros. It is the third of the six battery Gigafactories that the Volkswagen Group plans to start up in Europe.
On the other hand, and within the framework of the event held to present the new battery factory, the Volkswagen Group has also announced a strategic agreement with Iberdrola for the construction of a photovoltaic plant in Sagunto that will aim to supply green energy to the Gigafactory. The solar plant will cover an area of 250 hectares and will be located less than 10 kilometers from the battery factory. In the first phase, it will have the capacity to contribute 20% of the total energy of the Gigafactory.
