This new measure will allow Washington to impose sanctions on any person or entity determined to operate in those sectors, the Treasury said.
This Thursday the United States government imposed new sanctions on Russia for the invasion it has carried out since February 24 in Ukraine. These new sanctions are an effort to broaden the authority of the measures and veto operators in the technology sector.
The first sanctions imposed by the Joe Biden government on Russia have caused various companies in the restaurant, retail, service and technology sectors to close their stores in that country.
As also according to data from Statista and a file where a simulation carried out by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) highlights, it details what will be the impact that sanctions and closures have on the Russian economy, as well as on the role of the sectors they target.
According to these calculations, an energy embargo would have the most serious consequences, since it is estimated that Russia’s gross domestic product would fall by almost 3 percent if all gas imports and exports were stopped. An oil embargo, by contrast, would cause a 1.2 percent drop in GDP.
New US sanctions on Russia in the technology sector
These new sanctions are with the aim of expanding the authority of the measures and veto operators in the technology sector so that Moscow cannot avoid penalties.
Through a statement, the United States Department of the Treasury said which imposed sanctions on 21 entities and 13 individuals, including the Mikron joint-stock company, the largest Russian manufacturer and exporter of microelectronics and the largest chip manufacturer in Russia.
Likewise, in its text, the US department highlighted that it also “expanded the sanctions authorities to include the aerospace, maritime, and electronics sectors of the Russian economy.”
This new measure will allow Washington to impose “sanctions any person or entity determined to operate in those sectors, the Treasury said.”
The Treasury detailed that the measure also targeted malicious cyber actors. “We will continue to hound Putin’s war machine with sanctions from all angles, until this senseless war ends.”Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen explains in the statement.
Let us remember that the United States had already imposed sanctions on Russia, so these measures are the latest imposed on Moscow by Washington and its allies.
The European Union also imposed sanctions on Russia. An adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, in charge of the humanitarian corridors, detailed that at least 5,000 people have died in the city of Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraine, since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
