CDMX offers women from the US to travel to Mexico to have an abortion
The Secretary of Health of Mexico City (Sedesa) offered women from the United States a safe abortion in Mexico.
Its head, Oliva López, said on Wednesday that the program in the capital of the country can receive women who choose to travel to it to perform the procedure and decide on their body.
The offer is if the United States decides to declare abortion illegal in 26 of its states.
“We hope that the women’s movement in the United States manages to stop legislation that would be a setback that would violate their right, but we have the capacity to care (…) we are in the City that recognizes the right to health of all people and that provides care universally and free of charge,” he said.
Faced with the possibility that the Supreme Court will soon annul the constitutional right to abortion that women in the US have, Claudia Sheinbaum, Head of Government, said that she hoped that this would not happen, as it would be a setback.
Next week, Sedesa added, a group of state legislators from Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and North Carolina will visit the ILE services in the units of the Ministry of Health of Mexico City, to show health services and discuss the impact of annulling the right to Legal Interruption of Pregnancy in some states of the United States.
In the 15 years of ILE in CDMX, more than 247 thousand people have been served: some 77 thousand do not reside in the City and 62 have been from other countriesamong them, 7 from the United States, 5 from Colombia and 4 from Costa Rica, Brazil and Guatemala.
SEVERAL MEXICAN STATES HAVE APPROVED THE REPRODUCTIVE LAW. GUERRERO WAS THE MOST RECENT.
