Today, September 14, marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Game Cube in Japan. That’s right, it was in 2001 when the iconic purple and cubic console hit the market accompanied by games like Luigi’s Mansion. Although at the time the sales were not what Nintendo expected, we currently remember that this platform dearly.
The GameCube managed to sell more than 21 million units between 2001 and 2006, the year the Wii arrived, and although this number is not bad, it lacks compared to what was seen on the PlayStation 2. One of the biggest differences in this hardware was optical discs, which were small. This caused the console to hit the market without a DVD player, which undoubtedly affected sales.
However, this console is home to great games, both firts and third parties. Deliveries as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and of course, F-Zero GX are the jewels that we can find in the GameCube.
Although the console was not the success that Nintendo was looking for, the legacy of the GameCube continues to this day. Not only series that we saw being born on this console, like Pikmin, are still present, but the control of this platform is something that seems to never disappear.
The legacy of this console is so important that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had a special GameCube event.
Happy anniversary, GameCube!
