How was Time magazine born from a student newspaper?
Luce and Hadden were fellow students at Yale University and worked together on the student newspaper. After graduating, they both began working in journalism and eventually created their own magazine.
The first number of Time was published on March 3, 1923, with Joseph G. Cannon, the then Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, on the cover.
Back then, the magazine had a unique format that included a weekly roundup of the news and a focus on notable personalities. Time it differed from the newspapers and weeklies of the time by its concise and direct writing style, and its innovative design.
Open up to the world in the middle of a war
Time it quickly became one of the most influential magazines in the United States. In the 1930s, it expanded its coverage to include international news, and in the 1940s, it covered World War II extensively.
The magazine was also noted for its coverage of major events, such as the election of a new president, and for its detailed profiles of prominent personalities, from politicians to celebrities.
