The streaming war continues, and new contenders arrive in our country. All the big movie and television studios want to have their own platform. And it is that, thanks to them, they can reach a new level of control over the distribution of your content. However, sometimes solo bets are not the best.
In the United States, ViacomCBS, the parent company of major entertainment brands like Paramount, Nickelodeon or MTV, launched Paramount + a few months ago. For its part, Comcast introduced Peacock in 2019, with the catalog of studios like Universal or Dreamworks Animation. Both, designed to work better in the North American country.
However, when it comes to dealing with international deployment in some European countries, they have decided to take a completely different approach. To face the offers of competitors such as Netflix, HBO or Disney +, they have announced combining your catalogs on a single platform: SkyShowtime.
SkyShowtime, a name born from the combination of Sky, the British media and entertainment group owned by Comcast, and Showtime, one of ViacomCBS’s premium brands, will be the streaming platform that will arrive in place of Peacock and Paramount +. The service will include the original contents of these, as well as the shows, series and movies of the ViacomCBS and Comcast brands.
Thus, the platform will have from its launch in 2022 with more than 10,000 hours of content from Universal Studios, Sky, Paramount, CBS, among others. A catalog that will include original series such as the adaptation of the video game Halo, or The Good Fight. The price and availability have yet to be seen, though.
Other aspects that remain to be seen are more related to the technical characteristics of the platform itself. It is clear that you will not be short of quality content, but it is also critical that you have applications that allow you to enjoy all of this in the best conditions. We will have to wait for more details.
