As part of the infrastructure works being carried out in southern Mexico, three years ago the Government of Mexico announced the construction of the Tulum Airport, whose name will be Felipe Carrillo Puerto. In the same way as the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, the construction of the new aerodrome is in charge of the Ministry of National Defense.
The Tulum Airport will have an investment of 3,200 million pesos and is being built on 1,200 hectares. It is intended that it attend to about 6 million passengers a year and carry out 32,000 operations in the same period of time. It is expected to be the second busiest airport in the Southeast, only after Cancun.
One of the main objectives of the construction of this airport is to relieve the saturation of the Cancun International Airport. Added to the above is the construction of the Mayan Train, which aims to create a mass transportation network throughout the southern part of Mexico.
Among the main characteristics of the Tulum Airport is a 3,700 meter long runway and category one control systems. Likewise, the complex will have 13 positions for commercial aircraft. It will also have two positions for executive and general aviation. The entrance to the airport will be on federal highway 307 and will have a connection to the Mayan Train. The new airport is expected to be inaugurated before the end of 2023 and currently registers 50% progress.
“We evaluated the construction of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. It has 44 percent progress; The 3,700-meter runway is practically finished and there are 4,800 construction workers directed by the military engineers responsible for the work,” reported President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the beginning of June 2023.
