The National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” (INCMNSZ) held the ceremony to welcome the new residents of the 2023-2024 generation. At the same time, the event served to say goodbye to all those who concluded this stage of their professional life and also to recognize the best medical thesis
As a guest at this event, the head of the Ministry of Health (SSa), Jorge Alcocerwho stressed that this Institute constitutes a bulwark of the National system of health to guarantee highly specialized medical care for people without social security.
After delivery of diplomas for the end of postgraduate courses specified that the INCMNSZ It is a true seedbed of specialists who claim humanism in medicine and recognize the real needs of the population, without neglecting the person who suffers, suffers, feels and requires relief.
Doctors should never tire of learning
He stressed that The doctors must be eternal students. At the same time, the teachers must be constant in transmitting skills related to the human, such as affection, ethics and morality.
“In your arduous path to be specialists you play a multiple role, you are at the same time providers of medical attention, educators of students, teachers and researchers”.
Alcocer Varela explained that 10 students obtained a master’s or doctorate degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). While 117 finished specialty, of which 46 are women and six foreigners, and 105 concluded high specialty postgraduate (51 doctors and 54 doctors).
He pointed out that it is necessary to encourage research and teaching among young doctors, with the aim of forming a new generation of professionals who combine medical practice, academia and science that our country requires.
Recognition for the best medical thesis
During the ceremony, the “José Antonio Martín Mora” Award for the best medical thesis at the end of the course to César Alejandro Gómez Rodríguez, from the specialty of Internal Medicine. He is the author of the work Hemodynamic evaluation of right heart congestion with Doppler ultrasound in pulmonary hypertension, portal versus intrarenal venous flow pattern.
Also, they delivered awards “Dr. Juan A. Rull” in Hematology to Bernardo Martínez Guerra, and in Urgency to Mariana Quintanar Martínez. While the “David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz” Award went to Ivonne Hurtado Díaz de León and Jorge Eduardo Gaytán Arocha.
Before the graduates, medical staff, teachers and family members, the Secretary of Health said he was proud of the role they played during the health contingency.
Increase in places to study a specialty
He stressed that the continuity of medical education is imperative, which is why the Government of Mexico doubled the number of places to study specialty in frontal areas such as Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery and Gynecology-Obstetrics.
For example, in 2019 only 9,964 doctors out of the more than 50,000 supporters of the National Examination of Applicants for Medical Residencies (ENARM) got a place; This year, 18,495 new residents will enter, a significant figure that vindicates the right to education, expands the opportunity to enter a specialty, and contributes to reducing the shortage of professionals in national territory.
The general director of the INCMNSZ, Jose Sifuentes Osornioaffirmed that as medical professionals they are obliged to defend and respect the rights of patients and to inform their families at all times with simple words, without technicalities, without embellishments, the true condition of the patients, diagnosis, treatment alternatives , chances of recovery and prognosis.
He indicated that in some cases healing is achieved. In others, temporary improvement with the possibility of recurrence, or palliation with unfavorable outcomes in the short and medium term. In these moments of fragility and sensitivity, patients need accompaniment and assistance with warmth and kindness.
On behalf of INCMNSZ residents, Ivonne Hurtado Díaz de León pointed out that the medical care during her stay at the institute allowed them to learn that medicine is much more than science; it is a work with humanism where empathy, compassion and respect are as important as knowledge.
He was grateful for having trained in an institution of excellence where they received a solid preparation that allows them to face any challenge, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which, on the one hand, impacted their training and, on the other, strengthened their vocation and commitment.
