We know very well that Goku is one of the greatest warriors in the entire universe created by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, giving him the ability to outmaneuver almost any foe that confronts his power (even more so as his power grows should he suffer a “loss”). Nevertheless, the source of his power is actually much darker from what his fans thought and sheds a new light on the character.
The origin of his power is revealed in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 40., where we see Goku, Android 17 and the rest of the Z fighters face warriors from other universes in the Tournament of Power, one of the most popular arcs of the series. In this chapter, 17 seemingly sacrifices himself by detonating himself to give his teammates a chance at victory, creating an explosion that he hoped would be enough to take down an incredibly powerful opponent named Jiren.
However, 17’s sacrificial attack barely left a mark on Jiren, though her death inspired Goku to break another power barrier, this led his fans to wonder if this was the origin of his power. At the time, Goku had been working on mastering Ultra Instinct, an angelic form that makes Goku practically untouchable, but without much success. Due to 17’s apparent death, Goku was filled with enough raw emotion and newfound focus that he was able to fully channel Ultra Instinct and fight Jiren on equal terms.
It seems like just like Krillin’s death inspired Goku to become a Super Saiyan for the first time, 17’s apparent “death” gave him the boost he needed to better harness Ultra Instinct to its fullest potential. This is a worrying trend, as every major power surge Goku goes through is inspired by the death of one of his friends or allies.
While Goku isn’t the one to kill them, and they tend to either come back to life or reveal that they weren’t dead in the first place soon after, it seems like Goku wouldn’t have been able to break through those power barriers without first witnessing their deaths, which insinuates that the deaths of his relatives are the true source of Goku’s power. The idea that Goku wouldn’t be as powerful as he is today without the sacrifices of his friends is incredibly dark. However, it could be argued that Goku is honoring his deaths by becoming powerful enough to avenge them.
The origin of Goku’s power in Dragon Ball
While that’s a nice sentiment, to think that Goku only wants to avenge his demise, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the major increases in Goku’s power level are only made possible by the deaths of his friends – an unsettling source of power to behold. which Goku agrees is much darker than Dragon Ball fans.
And, is that time and time again, Goku has proven to be one of the strongest mortal fighters in the universe, if not the strongest, and although he always uses his strength for heroic purposes, but in many of his adventures, victory is at the cost of these tragedies. This trigger could be related to his Saiyan race, as we remember that when he manages to transform into Osaru, he is dominated by his emotions to release his power.
Goku’s strength is derived from the same place as any other Saiyan, although it is true that his base power far exceeds most other members of his race. When a warrior faces his own death or experiences a particularly traumatic event, he can use those raw experiences to channel large amounts of energy and permanently increase his power levels. One of the first major barriers Goku broke in terms of increasing his power was when he was fighting Frieza on Planet Namek and the evil tyrant killed his friend Krillin right in front of him. After witnessing Krillin’s death, Goku was able to attain Super Saiyan form and finally defeat the evil enemy of his. So, this may be a recurring trope in the following stories.
