What about SUVs?
The compact SUV segment has split in two, after Volkswagen and Mazda released models that, in size and price, fell somewhere between their subcompact SUVs and larger compacts. Thus, Volkswagen Taos is between Taigun and Tiguan, and Mazda CX-30 between CX-3 and CX-5.
Both models became best sellers and the rest of the manufacturers did not hesitate to follow the same path. Toyota, for example, launched its Corolla Cross SUV at the end of 2021, which is positioned between Raze and RAV4. Now, MG has decided to bring RX5.
MG RX5: engine, dimensions and equipment
RX5 falls in size between ZS and HS. At 4.57 meters long and with a wheelbase of 2.70 meters, the new vehicle has good space for passengers traveling in the second row of seats.
The exterior design is marked by its angular lines, a large front grille in the shape of “shark fangs” and a fluorescent green trim that surrounds the entire vehicle.
Inside, RX5 comes equipped with a 14.1-inch vertical touchscreen that provides access to the various functions of the infotainment system and enables connectivity with smartphones through MG Connect, with compatibility for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, the SUV features a 7-inch digital instrument panel and a surround sound system that claims to give an immersive driving experience.
RX5 features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 168 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of peak torque. It also includes a variety of electronic safety features, such as ABS, TCS, ESP and the VDC system. In addition, it has six airbags in the front, side and curtain.
Versions and prices of MG RX5 in Mexico
The RX5 model, the sixth that the brand brings to the Mexican market, is available in two versions with different entry prices. The Excite version has an initial price of 479,900 pesos, while the Elegance version It has a price of 560,900 pesos.
One of MG’s key tactics has been to price wedge versions of its SUVs. In this sense, the entry version of the brand’s largest compact SUV, the HS, is located between the two versions of the RX5, with a price of 519,650 pesos.
Hernández highlighted that although this strategy could generate a certain cannibalization between the different products, its objective is to make it easier for customers to have the option of jumping from one model to another and staying within the brand.
“If you don’t cannibalize yourself, some competitor will,” he says.
Hernández explained that through the synergy of both models, MG aims to sell some 6,000 units of its compact SUVs during the rest of 2023.
