Patrick Stewart, who played Charles Xavier between 2000 and 2017, revealed the reasons for returning as Professor X in the Logan plot
In March 2017, after a 17-year run as Professor Charles Xavier, Patrick Stewart put an end to this character in the Logan storyline, along with Hugh Jackman, who also said goodbye to Wolverine.

In an interview for The Independent, which is compiled by SlashFilm.com, Patrick Stewart recalls when he was approached to make one last X-Men movie, with a setting far from the X-Mansion and Logan’s heroic side.
“I was a little surprised that there was another (movie). Then news about the content started trickling in, first of all it could be a very limited number of us, then the script came along. I had been told that this was going to be a quite different Charles Xavier”.
Stewart, who has played Charles Xavier in the X-Men saga in five films, pointed out that humanizing the mentor of the mutants, and placing Logan and Xavier in a very bleak environment, caught his attention.
“It wasn’t Charles that struck me when I read these scripts, it was the description of the location of the first scene he was in. When I read the description of where we were, I was immediately very interested; This is not Xavier’s beautiful and magnificent home in Westchester County, Connecticut. And we left. I was delighted”.
Emotions were on the surface
Patrick Stewart recalled the moment at the film’s premiere that he and Hugh Jackman realized they had both reached the end of their time in the X-Men franchise, in an epic conclusion.
“Hugh was sitting next to me, with James (Mangold, the director) on the other side of him. And the audience was clearly very engaged and that was satisfying. It got to the last five or six minutes of the movie and Hugh’s hand reached out and took mine and squeezed my hand. He looked at me and had big tears and of course that turned me on. Here we are, the two X-Men wiping away tears in our very own movie! And then I thought as we were watching, ‘My God, this is a farewell ending. What could I do to overcome this?’”
In 2022 Patrick Stewart will play Charles Xavier again in a special participation in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
