Port Adriano, located on the island of Mallorca, will be the first in our country to have a wave power plant with which to generate energy. This project has been promoted by Eco Wave Power Global and will have a capacity of 2 MW.
The agreement between Port Adriano and Echo Wave Global for the construction and operation of a plant wave energy on the island of Mallorca it is already a reality, so Spain will have its first installation of this type in the future.
According to the agreement, Port Adriano will have permission to operate the facility for 20 yearswhile the Swedish company will be in charge of obtaining the licences, as well as the construction, start-up and sale of the electricity produced.
This will be the first wave power plant in Spain and will be developed in two stages: the first will have a capacity of 1 MW, while the second will double its capacity to meet the 2 MW target.
Spain, the ideal environment for renewable energy
According to the founder and executive director of Eco Wave Power, Inna Braverman “when it comes to renewable energy, Spain foresees a considerable construction of new renewable energy capacity to reach 74% of electricity generation by 2030. Spain also has 8,000 km of coastline»point.
This makes our country an ideal environment for investment in renewable energies such as wave energy
This is how the wave power plant that Eco Wave Power operates in Gibraltar works.
“The combination of Spain’s ambitious renewable energy goals, along with its significant coastline, makes it an optimal market for Eco Wave Power. We are very excited about the collaboration with Port Adriano and would like to thank them for to be true pioneers of wave energy»expands Braverman.
For his part, the executive director of OCIBAR, the company that owns Port Adriano, Antonio Zaforteza points out that “we believe that Eco Wave Power fits perfectly with Port Adriano’s vision of innovation and sustainability, creating a new way of generating renewable energy, which It will help our port and our country to meet its ambitious goals to face the climate crisis”.
What is wave energy
Wave energy is called wave energy. Consists in capture energy through the movement of waves produced by the wind. This energy can be used to generate electricity, desalinate or pump water.
The procedure consists of a machine that incorporates a power converteralthough it is not a widely extended technique, unlike solar, wind or hydroelectric.
For comparison, the power density of photovoltaic panels is 1 kW/m² at maximum solar insolation, and the power density of wind is 1 kW/m² for wind speeds of 12 m/s. Instead, the average annual power density of waves off the coast of San Francisco is 25 kW/m²that is, much higher.
The world’s first commercial wave power installation was installed in 2000 in Scotland. Portugal also opted for such an installation in 2008, although it only lasted two months as a result of technical problems. Currently, it is an energy still in development.
