This house has recovered the original essence of the 60s thanks to its recent rehabilitation carried out by Nook Architects.
Among Garraf Natural Park, in the province of Barcelona and its beach is this house of 328 m2 built and 550 m2 of exterior which, thanks to the pronounced topography of the area, enjoys privileged views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Its square meters are divided between two floors and an annex volume on the roof, which before the reform was accessed through a external spiral staircase. Over time, small outbuildings had been added to the original house that distorted its original volume. The state of the entire construction had entered a state of general deterioration due to lack of maintenance and the pool was poorly connected with the rest of the property, making it difficult to use.
The challenges of its rehabilitation: return to its essence, gain energy efficiency and improve its connection with the outside
Its new owners were forced to face a reform for which they resorted to Nook Architects who asked value the original construction, at the same time as improving its comfort, both from a functional and energetic point of view.
This made it necessary to propose a new distribution that would give rise to more diaphanous spaces, as well as to integrate the attached volume of the covered floor to the functioning of the rest of the house. In addition, the façade was intervened widening the gaps in the facade so that the spaces open much more to the outside, improving and enhancing the views over the sea.
Better insulation, aerothermal air conditioning and elimination of excess
The entire building has been completely renovated to improve their energy efficiency and sustainability. Thus, facades, roofs and terraces have been restored to solve the problems of humidity and adding new systems thermal isolation which has allowed to reduce its energy consumption. The facilities have been updated and an aerothermal air conditioning system for underfloor heating has been installed. and heat pump. Although the general volume has been respected, the ornamental elements and annexed bodies added after its initial construction to get to its essence. The result highlights the geometry of the house, so sixties with forceful straight lines and curves. Its forms have been adapted to the new needs and now they have a new interior layout to improve their relationship with the exterior.
New distribution
The new uses and ways of life forced the architecture studio to redistribute the entire house. The first and second floors have been articulated by the location of a new internal staircase with exit exit to the terrace on the second floor; where has it been located a new pool that functions as a limit and discreetly integrates into the landscape. This operation has allowed, in turn, to give a new life to the attached volume on the coverwhere it is now located the main room of the house.
Detail of the staircase that articulates a new interior circulation. The use of color highlights its planes and gives the staircase a sculptural character.
Timeless materials and green as a common thread
In all the reform has taken into account the materials to give rise to bright, neutral and timeless spaces. Seeking this timelessness, they have opted for stone and natural clay cladding for the exterior. Inside there is a lot of bespoke furniture and the floors in the bedrooms are natural oak wood.
In order to erase the limits, the same materials have been used in the exterior and interior. So the terraces are like extensions of interior spaces.
Another notable element is the selection of the chromatic range, with a soft green that fills the façade, the floors and part of the interior walls, in line with the colors of the exterior landscape.
Custom furnishings and an open layout
Custom furniture has been used as a limiter between spaces, having special importance in their configuration and functionality.
Thus, the living room is accessed through a large custom-made shelf/bookcase that serves to contain the fireplace, hide the television and as a bookcase and wardrobe while separating the space from the hall.
Following the living room is the dining room and the kitchen that runs quietly along a wall in the back of the room and that includes a practical island.
The kitchen is accessed through the living / dining room or directly from the second floor where the day area is locatedtaking advantage of the light and the spectacular views over the Mediterranean.
The bathroom of the main room is connected to it through a corridor in a green tone, which dominates the house. The large double sink in natural stone stands out, which rests slightly on the large bathtub. For the coverings, neutral coverings and black taps have been chosen, as a note of trend.
The sixties airs continue in the scarce, but well-chosen furniture and in its lamps.
The result of the rehabilitation is a very contemporary home that opens to the outside but that respects its history and its location, integrating smoothly, thanks to its curves and the green color, in its privileged location.
