“I have a month with the same pants”… Ricky Luis’s popular song helps us understand the popularity of denim pants. However, although they are pieces of clothing that we wear every day, but they are not as trendy as we think.
A few years ago the oldest known pair of jeans was discovered in the wreck of the SS Central America or “Ship of Gold” which sank in 1857 off the North Carolina coast.
This garment was auctioned off with 270 other gold rush-era artifacts found on the ship.
The most expensive jeans in the world
Items from the wreck, which include the lid of a Wells Fargo & Co. treasure chest and an 1849 Colt pistol, sold for nearly $1 million.
The jean pants are a pair of white miner’s jeans with a five button fly. Although initially believed to be early Levi Strauss, the brand would not start selling these garments until 16 years after the accident in 1873.
“These recovered artifacts represent a time capsule of life during the gold rush,” Fred Holabird, president of the auction company, told CBSNews.
The pants were auctioned for a whopping $114,000 (just over 2.2 million Mexican pesos at current exchange rates).
The pieces were sold by Holabird Western Americana Collections auction house in Reno, Nevada.
