Through her Twitter account, the head of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, Alejandra Fraustoreported the discovery of a sculpture very similar to the one Young man from Amajac.
“Today, residents of Hidalgo Amajac, northern Veracruz, unearthed this magnificent piece,”
reported Frausto.
Likewise, the official announced that the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is already carrying out salvage and research work on the piece.
The piece was unearthed by workers from the municipality of Álamo Temapache in the Huasteca of Veracruz, when they were carrying out resurfacing work on an alley. The precise place was right next to the Hidalgo Amajac school, when a machine moved the earth.
The piece immediately surprised the workers, as it is very similar to the popular Joven de Amajac, a piece that was found in 2021 on the banks of the Tuxpan River in the same municipality. On that occasion the piece was classified as unpublished in the archaeological discoveries of the region.
The young woman from Amajac is currently in the National Museum of Anthroology and is the main proposal of the Government of Mexico City to replace the sculpture of Christopher Columbus on Paseo de la Reforma.
According to María Eugenia Maldonado Vite, a researcher at the INAH Veracruz Center, the young woman represents a ruling elite woman and not a pre-Hispanic deity. The sculpture is made of limestone and measures 60 cm at its widest part and 25 cm thick. She has hollow eyes, in which she once could have seen a precious stone; small face; touched; shirts and long skirts.
