The social network Parler, famous for hosting conservative-leaning users, stopped working “indefinitely” last Friday. After months of uncertainty, in which the rapper almost bought it Kanye Westthe platform is now owned by the company star board. However, the first thing the new owners did was close it down.
Although it has not had great significance globally, Parler was very popular in the United States during the campaigns and the mandate of Donald Trump. Even being widely used by sympathizers of the American extreme right, it is said that it was key as a means of communication in the assault on the Capitol in 2021.
Parler was launched in 2018, it belonged to Parliament Technologies and it is estimated that he had about 250,000 active users per month. In February 2021, the board of directors decided to fire the co-founder of the company, john matzewho was CEO at the time.
Now, the controversial social network ceased operations after being acquired by Starboard, a digital media firm based in Virginia, United States. The company includes other conservative news portals such as BizPac Review and American Wire News.
Parler is ‘under renovation’
He Starboard CEO, ryan coyne, confirmed the purchase and its intention to renew the platform with the intention of relaunching it later. For now they have not given an estimated date for the possible relaunch of Parler, as there are few details about its future.
“While the Parler app, as currently constituted, will be decommissioned for strategic evaluation, we at Starboard see tremendous opportunities across multiple sectors to continue serving communities that are marginalized or even censored outright, even extending beyond politics. national,” Coyne in a statement.
The new company that owns the platform is looking for the way to monetize the platform. Therefore, they consider that a renewal of Parler is very necessary and almost imminent.
“No reasonable person believes that a conservative-only clone of Twitter is still a viable business,” Starboard said in the official announcement.
Coyne still sees conservative communities who believe they have been censored or marginalized as an important (and profitable) niche. Therefore, he hopes to keep users on Parler and integrate them into his other channels, despite the competition represented by similar sites such as TruthSocialthe social network of former President Trump.
The purchase agreement between Starboard and Parler is expected to close before the end of the second quarter of 2023.
