The United States has reported more than 7,500 confirmed cases of monkeypox.
The United States announced this morning that it will buy the intravenous drug Tpoxx from the pharmaceutical company Follow to treat patients infected with the new monkeypox.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern on July 23. The United States did the same when seeing the rise in infections in its territory on August 4.
So far there have been 4 deaths from monkeypox outside the African continent: 2 in Spain, 1 in Brazil and 1 in India. Until August 1, 2022 there have been reported 103 deaths from monkeypox on the African continent.
Siga’s intravenous drug, Tpoxx, will be delivered to the United States within a year. The United States will pay the amount of 26 million dollars.
This medicine is being purchased as an alternative for those patients who cannot take the drugs orally due to the sores that appear in the mouth due to monkeypox.
More than 27,800 cases of monkeypox have been reported in more than 80 countries where the disease is not endemic. Pharmaceutical company Siga has also received multiple orders for its oral drug from Canada, as well as from countries in Europe and Asia-Pacific.
