It’s March and today, on International Women’s Day and throughout Women’s Month, it’s important to reflect on how we can support and be allies with women in our daily lives.
Here are some suggestions for men to be supportive without getting in the way or intruding:
- Active Listening: Listen carefully to the women in your life and try to understand their perspectives and experiences. Avoid interrupting or trying to give quick solutions.
- Educate yourself: Research and read about issues relevant to gender equity and women’s rights. Try to educate yourself as well as other men about feminism and how you can be allies.
- Make a personal commitment: Set yourself the resolution to challenge and dismantle sexism and gender discrimination in your own life. Reflect on your attitudes and behaviors and work to be more mindful and respectful.
- Support the women in your life: Celebrate and encourage the accomplishments and goals of the women in your life, whether they are friends, family, or co-workers.
- Speak up when necessary: If you see sexist behavior, misogyny or gender discrimination in your environment, speak up. Let people know that this type of behavior is not okay.
- Be a role model: Make sure you respect and value women with your own actions and behaviors. Be a role model for other men in your life.
- Amplify the voice of women: Support women to have a platform and a voice. Support the women around you so that they can express themselves and be heard.
I take the opportunity to also leave some publicity pieces that have been developed around this theme and that are worth sharing today:
