The Undersecretary of Health Hugo López-Gatell assured that the “risk is almost zero” of a child dying from Covid-19.
“The situation with minors, neither in Mexico nor the world has shown that it is a population at risk. Below 18 years of age there is a much lower risk of having Covid, especially serious illness and an almost zero risk of dying from Covid, ”said the official.
In the morning presidential conference, he mentioned that there is a probability of .004% that an underage person ends up in hospital for Covid, and an even lower probability that they lose their life.

He emphasized, however, that there are other health conditions that can put a person at greater risk of complications from infection, such as immunosuppressive diseases.
López-Gatell explained that the death of a 9-year-old girl in Sonora was due to a complication that the minor suffered from the infantile cerebral palsy she suffered.
“(The minor) had had a disease process, her life was not with all the potential that another child can have due to these conditions and this conditioned a greater risk of the outcome occurring. What we recommend for children and adults, regardless of the place to go, when they suffer from immunosuppressive diseases, follow the precautions indicated by the doctor. This goes beyond Covid ”, he highlighted.

Despite this, the undersecretary said that the opening of schools should not be conditioned because it would affect everyone else.
In addition, he did not rule out that there may be other waves of contagion by this virus, as he said that as long as it exists, there is the possibility that the infections will continue.
“As long as the pandemic exists in the world, all countries have the possibility of having a fourth and fifth wave,” López-Gatell warned.
