BMW does not rule out the return to the market of one of its most iconic models, the BMW M1. A return possible thanks to electrification and BMW M’s commitment to custom models. On the table is the idea of a 100% electric supercar inspired by the M1.
In recent years, the possible return to the market of one of the most legendary and popular models of BMW. The idea of seeing the BMW M1 in dealerships once again is something that many followers of the German company expect. However, and unfortunately for fans of this model, this dream has not materialized.
The return of the M1 is something that BMW itself does not rule out. A possible return, to a large extent, to the rise of electrification. Now, before throwing the bells on the fly, the manufacturer has pointed out that we are not talking specifically about a new generation of the M1. Rather, a model that takes over and positions itself, to a certain extent, as a spiritual successor.
An electric supercar inspired by the BMW M1
BMW has opened the door to incorporate a new model into its range that is in line with the historic M1. A model that will take the form of an electrified supercar. Bearing in mind that the sports division of BMW wants to create more models to measure, now there are real possibilities of getting to see in the market a successor to the M1.
All the machinery has been set in motion for BMW M to press the accelerator in its particular electrification process. The BMW XM is a clear example of this new offensive of models that will stand out, among other things, for being electrified at a high level. However, if we look back, we will realize that there has been a change of course within the company.
In 2019, the BMW Vision M Next was presented to society, a conceptual model that laid the foundations for the future of BMW M. A concept car with which to glimpse some of the keys of the sports cars that were to come. At that time, the possibility of this same concept model being taken into production to play the role of successor to the M1 was discussed. Soon after, reports began to circulate that the project had been cancelled.
The BMW Vision M Next is back in the spotlight
the dome of BMW has put the Vision M Next back In the spotlight. It is important to emphasize, once again, that the project does not have a green light, but it is true that those who must give the go-ahead are receptive to this possibility. Frank van Meel himself, Head of BMW M, has declared to a specialized British medium that they continue to explore these ideas: «It is always something we can look at. It doesn’t mean we will, but we’re still exploring those ideas.”
The top leader also pointed to the fact that the Vision M Next did not come to fruition: «It does not mean that we are not thinking of a supercar. I’m always trying to figure out how it would work,” Meel said.
Finally, Meel assured that for BMW M it is not an urgent need to make a supercar and that is why they are working on the XM: “We do not need to show that we are a sports company.”
