That things are changing at Porsche is nothing new. Irrefutable proof of this are the Porsche Taycan and the future electric Macan, but there will be more. And it is that there are many who fear for the stability of the 911, a model that, to date, has remained true to its principles if we ignore the supercharging to which it has succumbed. However, and for the peace of mind of the fans of the mythical 911, everything indicates that there will be a hybrid variant before the year 2024, but nothing electric.
And it is that Porsche is very clear about the strategy it wants to follow to not only reduce emissions, but also to continue offering the sportsmanship that characterizes them so much. To achieve this, and as we have already seen, the German house is very sure with the development of synthetic fuels, an alternative that can save combustion engines.
For now, it is early to talk about the specifications of this type of life support, but they promise to be a reality in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, Porsche is seriously considering the possibility of a hybrid 911, a model that, due to its mechanical configuration and its reason for being, does not make sense as 100% electric, a category that other models that start from an existing base or from a new.
And the fact is that Michael Steiner, member of the Porsche R&D department, has stated that “if we make good progress, it is possible that by 2024 all 911 Carrera will work with eFuel.” He also concluded that “Porsche has to contribute to this change, which is why the combination of synthetic fuel with electro-mobility is necessary.” With this premise, we can foresee the steps that the German firm will follow four years from now.
It is not entirely unreasonable to consider the birth of a hybrid Porsche 911, a variant that would inherit a lot of technology from some models of the firm that already use this system. It is true that they would have to adapt it to the six-cylinder boxer and its unusual position to be able to couple an electric drive not only capable of increasing power, but also to reduce emissions and consumption.
This is how we have to prepare for an imminent change at Porsche, a brand that already anticipates that four years from now we will witness important developments. And it is that electric and hybrid mobility are alternatives that are here to stay and that will affect all segments, including sports.
