Polestar has achieved what many manufacturers have been trying to achieve for some time, improving the chemistry of their batteries to achieve extra autonomy. The Swedes have achieved a small increase in the battery capacity of the single-motor version, which has increased to 69 kWh, and the maximum autonomy to 470 kilometers.
Most electric car manufacturers are constantly working to make the most of the capacity of the batteries they equip in this type of zero-emission models. Not only do they leave a margin of safety, but they also have a second margin that allows to increase the capacity and, therefore, the maximum autonomy in retrofits or taking advantage of facelifts.
The Polestar 2 is not in either of these two very special situations, but the Swedish firm has decided to improve its autonomy, especially that of the most basic version of the range. the of front-wheel drivewhich has an electric motor on the front axle that provides a maximum power of 170 kW, equivalent to 231 CV. This option, one of the most demanded in countries like Germany, is associated with a lithium-ion battery placed between the axles that offered a net capacity of 64 kWh.
More autonomy in the Polestar 2 but without increasing its weight
Now, thanks to some improvements implemented in the prismatic cells of the battery, those from Goteborg have managed to add a extra 5 kWh up to a total of 69 usable kWh. Just keeping the same level of weight of the device, so it has not changed. And despite this, the new level of capacity is capable of offering no less than 30 extra kilometers.
In total add one maximum autonomy with a single charge of 469 kilometers in the most basic version of the Polestar 2. But it is not the only improvement that the sports sedan has benefited from, but also the charging speed in the fast charging mode with direct current. has been increased to 130 kW. The technicians of the Swedish brand have optimized the load curve to the maximum, allowing the new load speed to be hold at the highest level for as long as possible.
Mike Whittington, global sales manager for electromobility at Polestar, confirmed precisely that “the basic version of the Polestar 2 is very popular with European customers”, and especially in Germany, adding that “given this popularity, we have decided to present a Improved battery sooner than expected. In the German market, the 64 kWh option is about to run out, since the units are preconfigured, so the arrival of the new option is practically imminent. So much so that the German division has already put a price on it: 42,925 Euros, with taxes but without discounts.
