In 2014, the Oscars registered about 28 percent of American households watched the broadcast of the ceremony.
In the 2020 edition, it experienced a decrease of seven points compared to the previous year.
At the 2021 ceremony, the audience was one of the lowest in history.
The 95th edition of the Oscars is approaching, which is why after last year’s controversy, when the awards ceremony was the scene of the altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock, the Academy announced that a crisis team will be present at this new one.
According to data from the same awards ceremony, in 2014 the Oscars recorded that about 28 percent of American households watched the broadcast of the ceremony. For its part, in the 2020 edition, there was a decrease of seven points with respect to the previous year, standing below 14 percent of households.
Likewise, Nielsen, a company specializing in consumer measurement, highlighted that at the 2021 ceremony the audience was one of the lowest in history, with just 9.85 million viewers.
The Oscars Crisis Team
The announcement was made by the director of the Hollywood Academy, Bill Kramer, in an interview with Time magazine, where he mentioned that they will have a crisis team, as well as other protocols in place.
“We have a whole crisis team, something we have never had before, and we will put other protocols in place after considering various scenarios,” Kramer explained about this “unprecedented” decision by the Hollywood Academy in its 96-year history.
All this scenario comes after what happened in 2022, when the actor Will Smith burst onto the stage to slap the host of the night, the comedian Chris Rock, and unleash the Oscar winner being banished from the most important gala for the Cinema industry.
Given this, the director explained that the “planning” has been based on creating a “series of structures and communication teams” to meet as quickly as possible and act together, if an unexpected event occurs.
“Because of what happened last year, we have opened our minds to all the things that can happen at the Oscars. This way we will not decide on the fly, the group that we have to gather, who will be the spokesperson or the format of the statement, ”he added.
All this comes, when just ten days ago, the president of the Hollywood Academy, Janet Yang, admitted that the organization mismanaged the case of the slap that Smith gave Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscar ceremony.
“What we experienced last year was unacceptable and our response was not up to par. It was a turning point to act with greater transparency and responsibility,” Yang said.
The facts
Recall that the 94th edition of the Oscars was marked by the famous actor’s slap to the comedian, after the latter joked about the shaved head of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who suffers from alopecia.
After that night, the Academy took no action until days later, when it banned Smith from participating in the Oscars for the next ten years.
