Apple said nothing, but the new AirPods 3 include a completely new sensor.
After many months of rumors, Apple finally decided to launch the AirPods 3 on the market with its new design and more features, such as spatial audio with head tracking. However, Apple did not explain anything to us about a new and unknown sensor that arrives for the first time with the AirPods 3.
Now the AirPods range is more complete than ever, with 4 different models for, also, different types of user. Choosing the right AirPods model is not easy, especially now that we know about the existence of this mysterious new sensor of the AirPods 3.
The new sensor of the AirPods 3
AirPods 3 feature a skin detection sensor which can tell whether or not the headphones are on your ears. This will prevent the AirPods from starting to play music when you leave headphones on a table or in a pocket, as it is able to distinguish skin from other materials.
Here’s how Apple describes this functionality in the AirPods 3 press release:
A new skin detection sensor accurately distinguishes whether AirPods are on the ear, rather than in a pocket or on the table, and stops playback when the user removes them.
In the Official page of the AirPods 3 on the Apple website, the company shows a similar description of this new sensor, which it did not say anything about in the presentation.
They feel, then they sound. The AirPods’ improved skin sensor knows how to distinguish between your ear and other surfaces. The sound plays when you wear them and stops when you put them in your pocket or put them on the table.
Hopefully Apple will include this new skin sensor on future AirPods Pro 2 that could be presented in 2022. One of the great functions of the AirPods is that they automatically detect when they are put to stop or play the music, and with this new sensor, this function is sure to be even more accurate.
