Loop Energy has just introduced the S1200 fuel cell engine, setting new standards for energy efficiency. The company hopes that fleets and commercial vehicles will especially benefit from this 173 hp engine.
Loop Energy, designer and manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells for commercial mobility, presented its new model on September 19 at the IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover: the S1200 with 120 kW of power (173 hp).
This new fuel cell system, soon to be launched on the market, builds on Loop Energy’s existing technology to provide a gain of 20% additional efficiency when it generates electricity.
“The S1200 dramatically lowers total cost of ownership and increases fuel cost parity by four to eight years”
According to the Canadian company, the S1200 is designed to offer up to 60% net system efficiencythat is, the one that includes the energy consumption of the air compressor, the refrigerant pump and other components of the system.
This efficiency allows an electric vehicle powered by this fuel cell to deliver up to 54% fuel efficiency to the wheel compared to the efficiency delivered by a vehicle with diesel engine, ranging between 20% and 30%.

Loop Energy uses a exclusive trapezoidal plate with channels called eFlow that taper to their bipolar plates. This increases gas velocity towards the bottom of the plate and provides superior performance for fuel efficiency and power output.
S1200 Fuel Cell System Specifications
- Up to 120 kW peak power using Loop Energy’s state-of-the-art bipolar plates
- Offers up to 60% net efficiency system in cruise mode
- Wide cruise mode window for high fuel efficiency in a wide range of power demands for different routes and driving conditions
- competitive dimensions and flexible packaging with IP67 protection
- The first load tracking fuel cell Loop Energy with dynamic response time
- wide temperature range operating with freeze start capability
Compare the cost of diesel
But the LoopEnergy S1200 It is not only much more efficient, but also allows the investment to be recovered in a much shorter period than has been calculated so far for this type of technology.
According to the company, fuel costs represent about half of the total cost of ownership of hydrogen heavy-duty vehicles, making progress in fuel efficiency an important factor in creating a tipping point for the commercial transition from diesel to clean fuels.
Loop Energy President and CEO Ben Nyland said, “The S1200 delivers world-leading levels of fuel efficiency for medium to heavy-duty vehicles, critically lowering the total cost of ownership and fuel cost parity increases between four and eight years».
For fleet managers, commercial vehicle operators and the hydrogen infrastructure market in general, this fuel cell means less hydrogen fuel used per kilometerlowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) of hydrogen electric commercial vehicles.
