The 2021 harvest began this morning in the Somontano Denomination of Origin, —the usual dates for this wine-growing area—, with the first bunches of gewürztraminer, a variety of grape with a wide aromatic range that gives rise to wines of unmistakable personality and with an excellent evolution in the bottle.
A campaign that began after a year with a very favorable climate for the vineyards that has been marked by a very good spring and mild temperatures in the summer season, variables that have guaranteed a good ripening and a good sanitary state of the grapes, matter premium of the future wines made by the twenty-nine wineries that make up the Somontano Designation of Origin, the first in the autonomous community of Aragon to start the harvest and, as usual, has done so with the collection of the white gewürztraminer, one of the earliest ripening varieties in the area.
Harvest in Somontano
The campaign will continue in a generalized way from the first days of September, and will last until the first weeks of October when the later grapes such as cabernet sauvignon reds, red garnacha, moristel and parraleta conclude. It is precisely because of the wide varietal map of Somontano, which includes fifteen grape varieties —cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, gewürztraminer, tempranillo, syrah, sauvignon blanc, macabeo, red garnacha, moristel, white garnacha, riesling, parraleta, pinot noir. and alcañón—, so the harvest season lasts about two months.
And it is that each variety of grape must be harvested at its optimum moment of maturation, a fundamental key to making quality wines, to which must be added the good sanitary condition of the grape, as a result of the good weather recorded throughout the year. Both variables have been essential for the gradual and progressive succession of the phases of the vegetative cycle of the vines.
The Regulatory Council calculates, after collecting the forecasts of the wineries, that at the end of the harvest between eighteen million and nineteen million kilos of grapes will have been collected, which would be about 20% more than the total figure of last year, which It was one of the shortest vintages in recent years for the appellation of origin. The estimated figure for this new vintage is part of what would be an average vintage in the last decade. Regarding quality, the appellation of origin foresees that this will be a great campaign.
