Last May, Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, Deutsche Telekcom and Telia Company launched the Eco Rating system to assess the sustainability of each mobile phone. Basically, what this standard does is give each terminal a score, from 0 to 100, which indicates how respectful it is with the environment.
Initially, Eco Rating began its journey in 24 European countries with a selection of manufacturers including Xiaomi, OPPO, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola or Huawei. Now the labeling system is expanding globally and inviting more operators to join.
Fairphone, Realme and Vivo join Eco Rating
As confirmed by Telefónica itself, the Eco Rating system for mobile phones launched in Europe will be extended globally after the five operators that support the initiative have extended their initial agreement to encourage operators around the world to participate.
Eco Rating was launched in May 2021 jointly by Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica (under the O2 and Movistar brands), Telia Company and Vodafone. Initially, the Eco Rating system reached 24 European countries, but now has spread to South Africa (with Vodacom) and Brazil (by Telefónica, under its Vivo brand).
In this way, the Eco Rating seal it is already being applied in 26 countries in which the five launch operators are present. In addition, it is expected that it will soon be implemented in other countries such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.
Currently, Eco Rating already evaluates more than 150 phone models of 15 different brands, nearly twice as many devices rated at launch. Fairphone, Realme and Vivo have been the last manufacturers to join the project, where we already had Grupo Bullit -manufacturer of CAT and Motorola resistant telephones-, Doro, HMD -manufacturer of Nokia telephones-, Huawei, MobiWire, Motorola / Lenovo , OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, TCL / Alcatel, Xiaomi and ZTE.
Remember that this system, based on the information provided by the manufacturers, evaluates each phone to assign it a overall score out of a maximum of 100. In addition, the Eco Rating label highlights five key aspects of the sustainability of the mobile in question:
Durability: robustness, battery life and warranty for both the phone and its components.
Repairability: the ease of repair of the device including design and complementary actions that can increase its useful life.
Recyclability: the possibility of disassembling and separating the components to be recycled, also the information available to carry out this process.
Climate efficiency: the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the telephone will be measured.
Efficiency in the use of resources: the impact caused by manufacturing in terms of materials used and resource depletion.
