One of the main navigation points of Google Maps since its launch has been that of show us the fastest route by default, to reach our destination in the shortest possible time. This is about to change and, as they advanced in March, the greenest route will be the default within not too long.
In order to be more ecological, as we read in Engadget, Google Maps will be based on factors such as fuel consumption, traffic or even the inclination of the road: all in order to search the route that least pollutes. These routes are already available in the United States and will arrive in Europe from 2022.
A greener Maps
Google wants to reduce the pollution and consumption of the vehicles that circulate using its application. To do this, from 2022 will show the least polluting route by default and ecological. This route will be based on different factors that affect the vehicle’s fuel consumption and gas emission, based on different parameters such as traffic, road incline and more.
If you do not like these changes to Maps, you can revert them so that it continues to show the routes as usual
The good news for the most hasty drivers is that we can continue choosing the fastest route. In fact, we can readjust this parameter and configure the default route to be the fastest again, something that we will have to do once the application is updated, which will show the greenest route unless we reverse the change.
In these new routes, Google Maps will show us how much fuel we can save by going the greenest route. For example, it will show us notices that may indicate that, even if it takes a couple of more minutes to reach the destination, we can save a certain amount of fuel.
According to Google, with this new measure more than a million tons of carbon emissions can be avoided, equivalent to removing 200,000 cars from circulation. It therefore remains to wait for this update to finish arriving sometime next year, since there is still no specific date.
