The construction of the Tesla mega plant in Nuevo León will begin in March 2024, according to the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García. This project promises to transform the automotive industry and the state’s economic landscape, marking a milestone in the transition towards a greener and more sustainable industry.
A year ago, Elon Musk, director of Tesla confirmed to García, the construction of an assembly plant in Santa Catarina, a municipality adjacent to Monterrey. This project, with a initial investment estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 million dollarsis seen as a game changer for the region and the global automotive industry, being part of Tesla’s ambitious plan to produce 20 million vehicles a year.
“We will also see each other from this Sunday to the next in Terralta, because we started the construction of the Tesla (plant),” said García.
Where will the Tesla plant in NL be?
The site chosen for the gigafactory is located in a strategic area known as “the exit to Saltillo”, on the Saltillo-Monterrey federal highway. This land not only stands out for its connectivity and strategic location, but also for the spectacular mountainous landscape of the Nuevo León huasteca, offering a unique environment for the development of this gigantic project.
In accordance with Bloombergthe new Tesla plant will not only focus on the production of electric vehicles such as the Semi tractor-trailer, the resurrected Roadster sports car and the Model 3 sedanbut also in the manufacturing of lithium-based batteries and chips for airplanes and ships, thus consolidating its position as a leader in technological innovation in the automotive industry.
Challenges and opportunities for the north of the country
The arrival of Tesla in Nuevo León is perceived as an engine of economic growth and industrial development, with the expectation of attracting additional investments and generating a significant number of jobs. Nuevo León, recognized for its qualified workforce and experience in the automotive sector, is projected as the favorite destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Mexico.
Despite the enthusiasm, the project faces significant challenges, such as water shortages in the region.
However, according to EFE, this obstacle also represents an opportunity for Tesla and the local government to implement sustainable solutions and advanced technologies that minimize the environmental impact of the gigafactory.
