Cold fronts don’t just put heat fanatics in a bad way. Have you noticed the increase in the price of eggs? The head of the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco), Ricardo Sheffieldexplains the high cost in recent weeks and rules out a shortage of eggs: “the chickens are cold”.
“The chickens are cold”, that is, they do not lay many eggs in winter because they do not like that climate. Therefore, production decreases at that time of the year and the price rises, detailed Profeco.
The official added that for the hens to continue laying eggs “normally”, they have to feel like on the beach. For this reason, gas burners have to be installed, which are more expensive, so that they are happy and produce.
In addition, he says that this happens every winter, however, it is also affecting the high demand in the north because in the United States it has a lower production than usual and the states close to Mexico buy the food in national territory.
“The price of eggs in winter has always increased seasonally; it starts to go up in November and starts to go down in March,” emphasizes Sheffield.
How much does the egg cost?
On the other hand, the National Market Information and Integration System (SNIIM) indicated that the average price of the red egg is between 42 and 55 pesos, while the white one ranges between 36 and 58 pesos.
However, according to reports excelsior, at least in five states the price shot up between 20% and 50%. For example, in Sinaloa the 30 eggs went from 80 to more than 120 pesos. Also, Coahuila, the cost per kilogram is 58 pesos and the cap is 70 pesos. But, in the south there is a similar situation. In Oaxaca, the price of the egg ranges from 130 to 150 pesos.
“If the fair price is 42 pesos, why do you pay 50 or 60, walk a few meters and buy it from another who is not a thief. There is no reason to file complaints. At most I’m going to visit him and I’m going to tell him not to overdo it. You can’t do more because it’s a free market,” said the head of Profeco.
