The 50th anniversary of BMW M is revealing not only new models, but those of Garching are taking prototypes that have never seen the light of production from the trunk of memories. Those secret special developments, which have been seen on occasion, but have not ended up materializing as this unprecedented prototype of the BMW M6 CSL.
Sometimes, manufacturers surprise with test mules on the asphalt of the circuits, in private facilities or on public roads, with camouflage or completely uncovered with which they carry out very specific tests, some that serve as a preview of a future model or also remain into oblivion, disappearing from the face of the earth. The 50th anniversary of BMW M is rescuing some of the most secret prototypes that the sports brand keeps in its workshops.
Facilities to which few have access, but which are a dream for many. Those of Garching have shown an interesting prototype that they keep from a supposed BMW M6 CSL. Specifically from the generation that marked the return of this legendary sports car, that of the «E63» launched on the market in 2005. As you can see, apparently very normal at the front, rather very discreet, but much more aggressive than the sports version at the rear.
The unpublished prototype of the BMW M6 CSL, the only one made of a very wild beast
The active drive rear spoiler on the rear boot lid was a detail specific to this M6 CSL, and truly unprecedented, as there is no BMW M model that features such a spoiler. The German brand never launched this very high-performance model on the market, recognizing that it only has this prototype, with an interior lined in leather and Alcantara, and with a peculiar transmission tunnel. The M6 was BMW’s single wildest bet in its category.
The reality that hides behind is a significant weight reduction of no less than 100 kilograms that, added to the propellant V10 improved that mounted the sportier models of its category at that time, it must have offered a truly superb performance. Much more than the 507 hp offered by the M5 and M6 of the time. And we say they should, because the brand has hidden this detail of the
BMW M6 CSL Prototype and has not revealed it.
But what we are fully sure of is that he had all the arguments to be a true beast of the circuits. The reasons why BMW did not decide to take it to series production are not known, but surely they have a lot to do with the significant extra cost invested for a limited edition, and the brutal outlay that the customer would have had to make for this version. Next year it will have an heir that will see the light of production, the M8 CSL.
