After three intense days of tasting, the jury of the Baco Awards – a panel of tasters entirely made up of professionals with recognized experience in the world of wine – has resolved a list of awards full of diversity and uniqueness that draws a map of unique wine-making Spain, a thermometer that measures the quality of the most recent harvest on the market, in this case 2020.
The best young wines vintage 2020
On the podium of this edition, a Galician red wine stands for once, Monica Albor 2020 (DO Ribeiro), made from the Mencía, Sousón and Caiño Tinto varieties, which has obtained the highest recognition, that of the Gran Baco de Oro Luis Hidalgo Award, the highest rated label on a scale of 0 to 100 by the panel of tasters. A wine whose production is 4,500 bottles and with an approximate price of 10 euros.
On the next step of the podium, the Grandes Bacos de Oro – with a score of over 92 points – eight wines have been classified:
- The whites Barrel Fermented Testament 2020 (DO Abona), Ramón do Casar 2020 (DO Ribeiro), O’Fillo da Condesa 2020 (DO Rías Baixas), Child of the Macabeo Malvasía 2020 Grapes (DO Bullas) and Castelo de Medina Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (DO Rueda).
- Reds Solo Tirio 2020 (DO Campo de Borja), Numun Syrah 2020 (DO Jumilla) and Quinta da Peza Mencía 2020 (DO Valdeorras).

In the Bacos de Oro category —with a score higher than 88 points— a total of eighty recognitions have been awarded, highlighting that of Elizabeth I 2020, of Bodegas Cerrosol in the DO Rueda, which has won the Baco de Oro for the Best New Brand, and that of Bartolomé Abellán, technical director and author of the Gil Family Estates wine catalog, which has obtained the Baco de Oro for the Best Young Wines Winemaker of the 2020 harvest.
As for the Bacos de Plata —qualification higher than 87 points—, a total of forty-four awards have been awarded.
And finally, for Denominations of Origin – a total of thirty-six have participated – the DO Rias Baixas lead the ranking, with twenty-one recognitions, and the DO Ribeiro and Rueda with sixteen both. The complete medal table of this edition can be consulted at this address.

Description
The Baco Awards, the traditional National Young Wines Contest that the Spanish Union of Tasters organizes every year, already have winners in its 2021 edition, in which almost five hundred references have participated, wines made all of them from the 2020 harvest.
