“As we no longer have more than land, these companies that did not manage to participate, or that participated and were not awarded, now they are asking for land for them to build their controlled premises”, says Pastor in an interview with Expansion. “If there is something that this airport has in its heritage, it is territorial extension; are 2,480 hectares”.
Which companies are interested?
For the international segment, the official explains that there are three fiscalized precincts that have been commissioned for its constructionwith private resources and that will be carried out by the companies themselves, without the participation of AIFA or the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).
In the national segment, there are seven companies interested in the two warehouses that AIFA has, among which there are also interested in building.
“For example, Free market They are looking for a space much larger than those two enclosures, they are in the process of analyzing to arrive and build a base here to handle their cargo,” he said.
In addition, the AIFA director assures that DHL plans to invest 30 million dollars in the controlled area that has already been awarded.
Pastor considers that, with these works, the cargo capacity of the airport -of 470,000 tons per yearin a first stage – could even be doubled.
“With that, we would already have enough capacity to handle the 567.00 tons that were recently handled at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM)”, he said about the burden transported at the capital airport in 2021, which was even 2% higher than 2019.
In addition to this, another company that confirmed its operation in the AIFA was TMM Groupwhich was awarded a lease to operate a controlled area of 5,184 square meters for a period of 10 years.
“The company continues to focus on increasing the market share of its businesses, offering its customers integrated transport, logistics, storage, distribution, maritime infrastructure and marketing services, relying on strategies for technological transformation, cost optimization and customer diversification. ”, said Vanessa Serrano Cuevas, president of the board of Grupo TMM, in the financial results of the fourth quarter of 2021.
Does the national cargo of the AICM move?
Despite the fact that the Undersecretary of Transportation spoke of a decree to move operations from the AICM to the AIFA, and later the Secretary of Government announced an agreement with the airlines to migrate all national cargo, the general director of the AIFA assured that there will not be a tax for it.
“There is no such document. At first there was talk of that decree, but that document does not exist. In such a way that it is the decision of the companies to come here or stay there,” he said.
“It does not mean that all the cargo will come, because the airlines complement their business model by using the cargo compartments for baggage with cargo, so the cargo will continue to work at the two airports, but we have the capacity to meet all that need. growth,” he added.
For now, with the addition of 21 new routes, AIFA’s ambition is to have between 64 and 66 daily flights from September, and increase the current average of 1,200 daily passengers a little more than 5,000.
“By the end of the year, we hope it can go up to between 7,000 and 8,000 passengers a day,” he said.
