To study Medicine it is not enough to have a vocation of service, but rather more qualities are needed. It is also required to do many sacrifices from the start of the race. Every year there are thousands who start training, although unfortunately not all of them complete it in a timely manner. Although it is until the moment you receive the diploma that certifies you as a doctor that you know that everything was worth it. You know it very well because you have already passed this formative stage.
To motivate excellence among young people who are in the university, the Medical Alliance, considered the most important fraternity in Latin America, established the National Student Medical Merit Award. It is a contest in which the best students of the degree from all over the country participate and in the end the five most outstanding are chosen.
Long selection process
In 2021, the second edition of the contest was held, in which 1,711 students from 83 universities across the country participated. After months of a competition consisting of multiple stages, the final stage has been reached and the winners are the following:
- Luis Alberto Cabrera Díaz – UNAM.
- José Agustín Gutiérrez Gómez – University of Monterrey.
- Jorge Bryan Ortega Márquez – UNAM.
- Itzel Soto Villanueva – Tominaga Nakamoto University.
- Germán Rivera Monroy – Universidad Anáhuac México Norte.
To reach these results, the students had to overcome stages since October of last year. In the first, they attended 10 master classes through Harvard Medical Master Class, where 869 participants were eliminated. Later they wrote an essay on “The Great Spirit of Medicine”, which was evaluated by the Academic Committee of the Harvard Medical Master Class, made up of national and international leaders in Medicine. At this time only 508 students continued.
The next stage was also rehearsals but this time they had to develop four. The first three on “Mindfulness applied in clinical life”, “Virtual medicine, a new reality” and “The role of the doctor in training in the face of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic”. While the last one was on a topic to choose between “The motivational clinical interview as a resource for change in first contact medical care” or “Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics, relationship between food and health”. In the end only 124 made it to the next phase.
Afterwards, the participants were interviewed by “Masters of Medicine” and had a private conversation with Dr. Mario Acosta Mejía, International President of Alianza Médica, with the aim of knowing his vision of Medicine in a comprehensive environment and worldwide.
Prize for each of the winners
Once these stages were overcome, the 46 finalists presented, in teams, a dissertation on Metabiomedicine, where creative leadership, transformational impulse, innovative thinking, conviction of ideas, assertive communication, evolutionary impact and commitment were evaluated. with Medicine, the patient and the being. With this, 12 participants advanced to the final and the winners were chosen from among them.
In addition to the experience and curricular value that this recognition grants, the winners will travel to Harvard University to receive their award in a commemorative ceremony. This seeks to enhance the values of Medicine and recognize the role played by the doctor in training within society for the construction of a new, more efficient and humane health model.
