Tesla has announced the future opening of a new gigafactory in shanghai, China, with the aim of complementing one of the factories that the company already has operating in California and that, precisely, is not dedicated to the production of electric vehicles. The new Gigafactory in Shanghai, in fact, will be destined to the manufacture of Megapackshuge batteries dedicated to energy storage.
The Shanghai Gigafactory will begin construction in late 2023 and is expected to open sometime in the first half of 2024. Tesla claims that once operational, lThe plant will be capable of producing up to 10,000 Megapacks per year. Each battery, Tesla points out, is capable of storing 3 MWh of energy; enough to power 3,600 homes for one hour. The company has also highlighted Bloomberg that the batteries made in Shanghai will be distributed globally.
Elon Musk, for his part, has stated in a tweet that the new Shanghai plant will serve “to complement the production of the Megapacks factory in California”. It is not clear, yes, if the batteries manufactured in China will go to the Megapack plants that Tesla has in regions such as Australia or Texas, or if the company will open new storage plants.
Megapacks, we reiterate, are batteries intended for large-scale energy storage, and solve some of the drawbacks of traditional power plants, such as supply outages.
Tesla is also working on the construction of a Gigafactory in Mexico
Tesla is also working on the construction of a new Gigafactory in Mexico, destined to manufacture a new generation vehicle. Although there are no details about it, it is likely that it is the Model 2, Tesla’s rumored cheap electric vehicle.
The Gigafactory in Mexico will also be the largest electric vehicle factory in the world, located on an esplanade with a total of 1,200 hectares, although only 40 hectares will be dedicated to the plant itself. López Obrador, the current president of Mexico, also revealed that this would not be the only facility that Tesla opens in the country. The firm is also expected to build a plant dedicated to the production of the aeronautical industry, as well as another for the manufacture of batteries.
