Let’s go back to the year 1984, when the Super Friends animated series is renewed with characters like Firestorm and Darkseid, who make their debut on the small screen.
Intending to stand up to Mattel, whose Masters of the Universe toy line was the sensation of the moment, Kenner joined forces with DC Comics to launch a toy line titled the Super Powers Collection.
Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Darkseid were the first characters to go on sale. These action figures had the peculiarity that when pressing the doll’s legs, the figure “threw” blows.
To promote the figures, the packaging art and promotional banners were by José Luis García-López, one of the great DC Comics artists who aesthetically redefined the publisher’s greatest heroes and villains.
One of the details that caught our attention was the comic that accompanied each figure, 8-page stories, in self-contained plots, in which each of the heroes had the “help” of other colleagues.
The Galactic Guardians
In 1985 Hanna-Barbera produced what was ultimately the final season of Super-Friends, renaming the show The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians.
With this new stage, Kenner launched new characters, including several that did not appear in the Hanna Barbera show, such as Shazam, as well as vehicles and action sets.
Two six-issue mini-series were also published for this new series. Which were written and illustrated by the legend Jack Kirby, the creator of the Fourth World and Darkseid.
Along with this last season of Super Powers Team, Warner Home Video relaunched the series of DC Comics characters that in the 1960s
Super Powers Collection has become over time action figures desired by collectors, who are willing to pay a fortune for these toys.
