Almost no one knows that Mexico was about to have an additional state to the existing 32. It was going to be called State of Iturbide.
The idea was that this entity would be number 23, since at that time there were only 22 states. And it would be made up of territories of Veracruz and Tamaulipas.
State of Iturbide, the one that would house the huasteca
In this way the state of Iturbide would be the state of the huastecasince it would have occupied the territories of TuxpanTampico de Veracruz, Tancanhuitz, Huejutla and the south of the state of Tamaulipas.
The project to create this new state was from Manuel Fernando Soto Pastrana, governor of the Mexico state and a constituent deputy in 1957.

300 thousand inhabitants would benefit from the new state of Iturbide
The main justification for such a project was to fulfill a promise made for years to the 300,000 inhabitants of that region about making them independent in a new entity, so that they would receive all the attention and services that they had not obtained by being separated from the centers of care. Veracruz and Tamaulipas.
The entire project was captured in the 86-page brochure titled The New State. There he explained that Iturbide would have two ports, as well as economic benefits such as the timber wealth of its mountains, fishing in the lagoons and sugar cane farms.
At least the state of Hidalgo was created
However, his initiative did not prosper. What he did achieve was the consolidation of the current state of Hidalgo, which was formed with part of the regions that Iturbide would occupy. In memory of this historical event, the capital of Hidalgo is named after Pachuca de Soto.
