The large chain of coffee shops, Starbucks launches a new type of ice for frozen drinks, but not everyone likes the idea. So we wonder Why is it so important and what does it affect?
First, a very important point needs to be explained. In the world of coffee shops, each ingredient and production process is relevant, since it affects the final product. From the coffee mix, the grind, the amount of sweeteners, and of course, the ice.
That being said, the equipment and staff are trained and calibrated to produce the same beverage at any location with little or no margin for error.
Now, with the recipe book of each chain of cafeterias, this is achieved. Therefore, when changing, even if it is the ice, there is a difference, however small it may be. Hence the concern of the people.
Rumors and confirmations
It all started with a post on Reddit, which fueled already existing speculation that a new type of ice could be coming to Starbucks. The post shared on the subreddit r/starbucksclaimed that ice would change cold drinks forever.
“New special ice (we are 1 of 3 coffee shops testing the new ice). What do you think? It looks like Sonic’s ice ”, reads the original publication, accompanied by a photograph of a cooler with ice in the form of nuggets.

This type of ice is softer than usual. Also, it is shaped through a mold to create a kind of flake ice.
then a TikTok published by @coffeepassport further fueled the rumor, by sharing a hot tea in contact with the new ice.
“To the people who said they don’t like Starbucks ice, they hurt you,” the TikTok user says in the video. She also shared a view of a document that identifies the type of ice machine to be used.
“Follet’s new Nugget ice machine will produce all the ice needed in your store by constantly creating it throughout the day, while using less water,” the screenshot of the clip reads in part. This type of ice machine creates ‘Chewblet’ ice, “uniformly chewable compressed pieces of ice nuggets”.

Starbucks’ new ice is confirmed
According to TODAT.com, a Starbucks representative confirmed to them that new ice is indeed being implemented.
“As we continue to innovate and invest in the starbucks experience For our partners (baristas) and customers, we are introducing new ice nugget making machines in select stores this year,” the representative said in a statement.
“Like many of our recent investments, this machine allows partners to focus on providing the starbucks experience while handcrafting the same high-quality, delicious frozen drinks our customers have come to expect from Starbucks.”
The same outlet says that the coffee chain reported that it carried out several tests, which showed that nugget ice does not melt faster than current ice. Thus, the concerns of many consumers about the future of their favorite drink can be allayed.
In addition, Starbucks said that tests showed that most customers did not notice the use of a different ice in their drink, but those that did, responded positively.
The real response from consumers
Of course, the comments did not wait, which were divided into two camps: those who are happy with the change and those who are not.
For example, “That looks like quality frozen H2O!”, “Pack it up and sell it as a snack,” two Reddit users wrote. Also, a Starbucks employee commented, “I can’t wait to eat this my entire shift.” “I love my drinks with extra ice so this is an improvement,” someone else expressed on TikTok.
On the other hand, mentions against it with reservations and concerns about the change said, “God, no, not hospital ice for coffee.” “Nooo, I think the ice they have now is so perfect. So perfect that I ask for extra extra ice because the coffee is easier to drink. This type of ice, in my opinion, is better for soft drinks or just ice water,” another Reddit user wrote.
However, so far, the new ice is only being tested in a few stores in the United States. Additionally, Starbucks added that the new machines use less water to make ice, which will contribute to its sustainability goal of cutting its water footprint in half by 2030.
