The battle between the music industry and artificial intelligence (AI) continues: Reports claim Spotify is pulling AI-generated music.
A report from the Financial Times (FT) reveals that The music streaming platform has withdrawn 7% of the songs created by the startup Boomy, which means “tens of thousands” of songs.
Spotify is also said to be stepping up its surveillance of the platform in light of the situation.
This comes after Spotify and other streaming services began receiving complaints of fraud and disorder on the platform. Music industry giant Universal Music Group (UMG) has alerted streaming service providers to “suspicious streaming activity” on Boomy’s songs, according to FT sources.
Finally, Boomy’s songs were pulled due to suspicions of “artificial streaming” by bots posing as listeners, Spotify commented:
“Artificial streaming is a long-standing, industry-wide problem that Spotify is working to eradicate across our service.”
Boomy representatives stated that the platform is “categorically against” any kind of manipulation or artificial streaming.
Lucian Grainge, CEO of Universal Music Group, commented to investors:
“The recent explosive development of generative AI, if left unchecked, will increase the flood of unwanted content on platforms and create rights issues regarding existing copyright law.”
Last month, UMG sent an email to streaming services, including Spotify, to block AI services from accessing music catalogs for training purposes. UMG has also sent petitions “left and right” to have AI-generated songs removed from the platforms.
While music industry giants fight to control AI, other artists like Grimes defend the technology. The musician allowed creators to use her voice and be a “guinea pig” for AI music creation as long as a small set of rules were followed and royalties were shared.
