Spotify confirmed that it is testing a new subscription on its streaming service that costs a tenth of the premium subscription (taking the cost in the US as a reference) but that improves the experience compared to users who use the service in its free version.
Its name is Spotify Plus, which has a price of $ 0.99, which at the exchange rate is approximately 18 Mexican pesos.
This subscription maintains the advertising that subscribers hear in the free version, but removes the restrictions that exist in this scheme. The above means that with Spotify Plus there is no limit to skip up to 6 song times per hour, and any playlist and track in the catalog can be freely listened to.
According to the latest Spotify user report, the Swedish-born firm has 365 million users, of which only 165 million pay a subscription.
This means that Almost 55% of the service’s user base prefers to listen to music with advertising and limitations of playback before paying for a subscription, which starts at 9.99 USD in the United States (115 MXN in Mexico for the individual subscription).
With Spotify, the company can attract a good part of those 200 million free users to pay a modest amount in order to improve their experience on the platform.
Will Spotify Plus be a reality in 2021?
The company mentioned to The Verge that there is no guarantee that Spotify Plus will become a new subscription within its offering at some point.
“Some tests end up paving the way for new offerings or enhancements, while others can only provide learnings. We do not have any additional information to share at this time, “clarified a company spokesperson.
In 2017 the company began testing to launch “Lossless audio” on the platform, but it was not until this year that the arrival of this feature was announced for the end of 2021. This means that if Spotify Plus is not launched, it could soon arrive in some other time.
