Sony Pictures and Disney failed to renew their agreement for Marvel Studios to continue producing the next Spider-Man movies, Deadline reports. Therefore, the arachnid superhero would be outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to the source, Disney intended to obtain 50% of the revenue generated by Spider-Man
The above-mentioned means in the last months a dispute between the two companies by economic subjects was generated. The Mickey Mouse wanted the profits to be divided by 50% for each company, a proposal that Sony totally rejected. The Japanese firm intended that Disney’s percentage remain as the previous agreement: 5% of the first gross dollar, that is, on the day of release. Of course, the US entity flatly refused.
According to sources close to the negotiation, two other Spider-Man feature films are on the way, both with protagonist Tom Holland and under the direction of Jon Watts. While still ongoing, the conflict will not allow Marvel Studios to get involved in its production. Definitely, the great success of recent deliveries raised Disney’s claims.
In fact, the impressive income of Spider-Man: back home and Spider-Man: Away from Home were about to open the door to other Sony characters. The report notes that Kevin Feige, director of Marvel Studios, held some meetings with Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures, who talked about the possible inclusion of new faces to UCM. Venom was one of the possibilities, but the collection of his film did not convince Disney.
Disney is confident that it can get ahead with the inclusion of the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool
It seems that those directed by the mouse have not shown any concern about losing one of the most emblematic characters of their universe. And it is that the recent purchase of Fox will allow them to take the reins of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, franchises with the potential to generate new gold mines. For its part, Sony believes that it can carry out the two projects mentioned above.
It is important to emphasize that the information has not been confirmed by either of the two organizations. If it finally materializes, it would be a significant blow to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the events in Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man was called to be one of the great references of the millionaire universe, the one who would replace Iron Man and Captain America.
