SPACE10 presented ‘Sofa in an envelope’, a speculative design exploration that rethinks sofa design to make it more friendly to people and the planet. In collaboration with Panter&Tourron, the project challenges AI to liberate the design stereotype of a sofa — reimagining how to make it lighter, easier to carry, adaptable and able to stand the test of time.
Historically, the traditional archetype of the sofa has been heavy, bulky and inflexible. Sustainability can be a challenge when designing a sofa, since people tend to seek above all their comfort. So the conventional sofa ends up taking up a lot of storage space and its transport consumes a lot of energy. Also, its numerous components make recycling difficult.
“This project started as a way to challenge problematic design archetypes. The sofa, as we know it today, is a complicated piece of furniture that requires a lot of effort, both to produce it and to move it. As beloved as it is, the sofa is often a burden on people because of its weight, on the planet because of the intricacies of its design, and a burden on friends who kindly help us move it. The project is an invitation to change, which seeks to inspire the design community to move towards a sofa that is better for us and the planet”, said Georgina McDonald, Creativity and Collaborations, SPACE10.
