This weekend, loin lovers have a powerful reason to go to the movies. Dogs, humans, adult humor and a very special revenge are mixed in sons of bitches, a film that will show us the consequences of not being a responsible owner. Interestingly, although technology has advanced to unimaginable levels, its makers relied on old-school techniques for this film. Believe it or not sons of bitches it has more use of real dogs than CGI.
In interview for Colliderdirector josh greenbaum (Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar) spoke about how complex a production like this can be. A few years ago, movies with talking animals were almost a genre, but today their popularity has waned. To capture the attention of new audiences, the filmmakers decided to turn it around with a script full of risqué humor, adult jokes, and behavior not suitable for the whole family.
However, they also wanted to stay true to the essence of this type of film. Focusing on the use of visual effects was the easy way out, but the results are not always as expected. Thus, CGI became the last resort and real loins became the priority.
“We shot it all without the voices, which is interesting. I would also say that 95% of what you just saw are real dogs, which is very important to me. Obviously, whenever doing something was dangerous for a dog, I was like, ‘Okay, let’s go full CGI,’ but for me, I really wanted to make sure from the start that it felt like seeing real dogs. Obviously, we had to make them talk because we couldn’t train them for that. But I thought about it, and we could have done the whole thing in CGI.”
Recently, movies like The Lion King, The Jungle Book or the trilogy Planet of the Apes demonstrated that animals in CGI can give good results. However, this type of production required special technology and budgets close to $200 million dollars. sons of bitches you couldn’t afford something like that (it cost almost a quarter of that figure). In addition, the filmmaker of him affirms that many canine owners could tell the difference between a digital dog and a real one.
“I kept feeling like I’ve had dogs my whole life, and I’m sure a lot of people in the wards have dogs too. You could put an elephant in a movie and I’d say, ‘Yeah, that’s pretty cool.’ But I’m around an elephant for five minutes a year when I take my kids to the zoo. In the case of dogs, I know them, we all do it. We live with them, their behaviors and gestures. I wanted it to feel as real as possible because the more real it feels, the funnier it gets, right?”
The director also pointed out that the “performances” of the dogs were achieved thanks to the work of the canine trainers. Although he knew that this existed, he did not know the level of emotions and details that could be achieved. All that interaction between the furry protagonists made everything easier when giving them a voice.
