- One of the lessons of the pandemic has been the importance of being absent from school or work while people are recovering so as not to generate sources of infection.
- A large-scale survey revealed that 62% of sick doctors would rather go to work than take a day off.
- Most cases are due to doctors having a strong sense of responsibility and caring more about their patients than themselves.
The health guild is not only necessary but also an example to follow for any society. Studying to care for and attend to others is something quite noble, although you should never make the mistake of focusing completely on others. The most important patient is always oneself. All this leads to a bad practice that is quite common: sick doctors prefer to go to work rather than miss the hospital.
Rest necessary for proper recovery
It is a reality that anyone is exposed to getting sick at any time. It does not matter if you avoid harmful habits and have a healthy lifestyle because the conditions can occur at any time. Although the chances of having health problems are reduced, it does not mean that they will never be present.
In that sense, it is natural that when a person becomes ill they have to be absent from their school or workplace while they recover. Recovery time depends on the type of condition and the extent of the problem.
In fact, One of the main indications during the pandemic was to remain in isolation in the face of any respiratory problem. The duration of the confinement indicated was at least five days and it worked as a strategy to break the contagion chains.
With the above in mind, it is one of the most frequent indications that health professionals usually give to their patients. From the first suspicion of a discomfort, you should go to a doctor and rest as long as possible to achieve a full recovery.
Doctors don’t set an example
However, the biggest drawback is that health professionals are not always consistent between what they say and what they do. In this regard, the Medscape portal published the results of the survey Employed Physicians Report: Loving the Focus, Hating the Bureaucracy 2022.
The research included the participation of 1,350 doctors from the United States. One of the most worrying points was that 62% stated that they usually go to work when they are sick. Instead, only 2% said that they do not go to their workplace when they feel unwell.
Although the survey was conducted in the United States, it is a bad habit that is repeated in the rest of the world. On the one hand, what is interpreted is that doctors have a strong sense of responsibility. They have such a commitment that sick doctors prefer to continue with their daily lives rather than leave.
On the other hand, it is also found that doctors often put others before themselves. They do not care that their state is not optimal because they think that others are more important than themselves.
Similarly, as was learned during the pandemic, going to work sick is the worst idea because it increases the risk of infecting other colleagues and patients.
